Munnar is famous for its spices from time immemorial. It is now an established fact that, spices from Munnar were taken to the ancient port of Muziris (Patanam) and it was connected with Madhurai by ancient Road Route. Set at an altitude of 6000 ft in Western Ghats in Kerala's Idukki district, Munnar was the favored summer resort of the elites during British rule. Though, Munnar is a very scenic place known for its tea plantations and spices, until 1990s, it was not well known outside Kerala and India as a Tourist destination. Munnar Town itself is a small area, but normally, when Tourists talk about Visiting Munnar, they are actually referring not only Munnar Town but also the surrounding areas of Munnar some times the entire Idukki District. One has to note that, area around Munnar is surrounded by vast jungles. Munnar today is a world famous Tourist Spot known for its vast tea plantations - pristine valleys and mountains- exotic species of flora and fauna in its wild sanctuaries and forests. Tourist activities in Munnar include boating in the reservoirs of the many dams, trekking, parasailing, hot air ballooning and camping and wild life safaris in the jungles and sanctuary.
Altitude : 1600 Mts to 1800 Mts above sea level. Main Tourist Season in Munnar is from August to May. As Munnar has extreme cold weather, many people avoid visiting Munnar during Winter that is December and January. Also the mountain ranges gets very heavy rain during the Monsoon and often the mountain road traffic may get affected due to landslides etc.
It is recommended to wear Warm Clothes and to carry Rain coats during Rainy season. Munnar and surrounding areas remain wet and cold during most part of the year.
